堆肥(タイヒ)完成、我が家の植木鉢に元気を注入する日です。
と呟きながら堆肥を与えていきます。
ワタシは今回のコンポストが完成すると約300kg分の生ゴミを焼却せずに循環させて、CO2を147kgも削減させているらしい。147kg？って言われても…ピンとこないので普段の生活に置き換えてどんなことができるのか調べてみました。
■ 飛行機で例えると？
→ 飛行機で東京〜大阪を片道1回飛ばないのと同じくらい。ワタシと家族の行動が空の旅1回分を帳消しできるのってすごい。
■ 車で例えると？
→ ガソリン車で約1,000km走らなかったのと同じくらい。 1,000kmって東京から福岡あたりまでの距離のようです。結構なインパクト
■ 電気で例えると？
→ 一般家庭の1か月半分くらいの電気使用に相当。エアコン、冷蔵庫、洗濯機…いろいろ使ってこのくらい。
■ 木に例えると？→ スギの木約10本分が1年間で吸収するCO₂量に相当します。庭にスギの木10本って想像してみて。
■ レジ袋で例えると？
→ 約5,800枚分のレジ袋を使わなかったのと同じ！
コンポストをはじめてから生ゴミの臭いに悩まされることなく、生ゴミの量もかなり減り、ストレスもなくなりました。市区町村でコンポストに関する補助金制度もあるようですね。調べてみてはいかがでしょうか。お子さんがいるお家だったら夏休みの自由研究にしても楽しそう。
温度計を入れておいて、発酵時のコンポストの中の温度を測ったり(発酵中は袋の中の温度が高くなります。冬は袋を開けるとホカホカの湯気が出る)、食材ごとの分解に必要な日数を調べたりと面白そう。

Compost Complete! Time to Recharge My Potted Plants
Today’s the day—my compost is finally ready, and it’s time to give my potted plants a good dose of natural energy! I say to myself, “Looks like it’s going to be another hot year, but let’s hang in there,” as I gently work the compost into the soil.
This batch of compost has helped me divert around 300 kg of kitchen waste from being incinerated. Instead of releasing CO₂, I’ve recycled it back into the earth—and apparently, that’s equivalent to cutting 147 kg of CO₂ emissions.
But what does 147 kg of CO₂ actually mean? I couldn’t quite picture it either, so I did a little digging to find out. Here’s what I learned:
- In airplane terms:
That’s about the same as not flying one-way from Tokyo to Osaka. Just by composting at home, my family and I have canceled out the emissions of one domestic flight. That’s pretty impressive! - In car terms:
Equivalent to not driving a gasoline car for about 1,000 km—that’s roughly the distance from Tokyo to Fukuoka. That’s a big deal! - In electricity usage:
It’s about the same as the electricity a typical household uses in a month and a half. Air conditioning, fridge, washing machine—all of it included. - In tree terms:
It’s like having 10 cedar trees in the yard absorbing CO₂ for a whole year. Try imagining that—10 tall trees standing proud in your garden. - In plastic bag terms:
The emissions saved are similar to avoiding 5,800 plastic bags! That really puts things into perspective.
Since starting composting, not only has the smell from kitchen scraps disappeared, but the amount of waste I produce has gone down significantly. No more stress—and a lot more satisfaction.
