I’ve recently gotten really into cooking with sparkling water! Did you know sparkling water has all kinds of amazing effects in cooking?
For example:
- When you use it in tempura batter, it makes the coating extra crispy and light.
- If you swap it for milk in pancake mix, you get super fluffy pancakes.
- And when you use it to cook rice, it turns out beautifully soft and plump.
And that’s just the beginning!
Sparkling water isn’t just for frying or baking—it’s fantastic for simmered dishes too. It’s especially great for tenderizing meat, making it perfect for stews or prepping meat before cooking. It even works wonders with fish dishes!
This time, I’ve shared a basic recipe for homemade chicken ham using sparkling water over on the Nadia website.
It’s simple, healthy, and a great way to start exploring the magic of cooking with sparkling water!
Super Easy & Healthy Chicken Ham Made with Sparkling Water
Ever tried making chicken ham at home? It’s way easier than you think—and using sparkling water is the secret to making it extra juicy and tender!
Not only does the carbonation help the chicken cook faster, but it also gets rid of any unpleasant smells. Just one simple step makes all the difference!
This time I used chicken breast for a lighter, healthier vibe, but if you’re craving something richer, you can totally swap it for chicken thighs.
And don’t worry if you don’t have sake or ginger on hand — the recipe will still turn out great without them!
This is a super flexible recipe you can easily adapt to whatever you have at home. Here’s how you can make this simple and delicious chicken ham!
Ingredients (Serves 2)
• 1 chicken breast
• 1 liter sparkling water (plain, unsweetened — about two 500ml bottles)
• 1/3 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon sake (optional — you can skip it if you don’t have any)
• 3–4 slices of fresh ginger (optional)
How to Make It
Quick prep tip:
Before you start, poke a few holes in the chicken breast with a fork. It helps it cook more evenly!
1. In a pot, combine the chicken, sparkling water, salt, sake (if using), and ginger (if using). Set it over medium heat.
2. Keep an eye on it — once tiny bubbles start forming on the surface (before it fully boils), turn the heat down to low. Skim off any foam that appears and let it gently simmer for about 7–8 minutes.
(Pro tip: The carbonation makes a lot of bubbles, so it might look like it’s boiling early, but you’re aiming for a gentle simmer!)
3. Turn off the heat, cover with a lid, and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
4. (Don’t throw away the sparkling water just yet!) Take out the chicken and slice into the thickest part to check doneness. If it’s all white inside and the juices run clear, you’re good!
If you see any pink, pop it back into the hot water for a few more minutes.
5. Once fully cooked, rinse the chicken gently under running water to wash off any scum or sliminess, then pat dry with paper towels. Slice it up and you’re ready to eat!
A Few Tips for Perfect Chicken Ham
• If your chicken breast is super thick and part of it sticks out of the water, just make a little cut in the thickest part and spread it open a bit. That way it cooks evenly and stays super juicy.
• For best results, use freshly opened bottles of sparkling water. The stronger the fizz, the more tender your chicken will be!
