Family Time & Cola-Braised Ribs – My Summer Gathering Go-To!

Since my dad is the eldest son and we used to live with my grandparents on his side, our house was always the go-to spot for family gatherings during Obon and New Year’s. That tradition still holds, so this time of year is always a little hectic for me!

Now that my mom’s getting older and not quite as quick on her feet, I’ve taken over as host. And when my growing nephew comes over, I make an extra effort to prepare a meal that feels special.

This time, I went with a fun Mexican-themed menu, but I felt like we needed a hearty main dish too—something with real substance. So, I added one of my go-to crowd-pleasers: cola-braised spare ribs. It’s super easy and always a hit!

Here’s how to make them:

  1. Start by seasoning the ribs with salt and pepper, then sear them in a frying pan until they’re nicely browned on all sides. This also helps render out some of the fat.
  2. Transfer the ribs to a pot, add garlic and enough cola to cover them, and let it simmer for 30 minutes to an hour. Skim off any foam or impurities that rise to the surface.
  3. Once it’s reduced down, pour in a bit more cola along with soy sauce and honey. I added a little extra sugar this time to make it sweeter.

That’s it! So simple, and it tastes amazing. Definitely give it a try!
